Bone Marrow Transplant: What Is It and How Safe Is It for Patients?
A bone marrow transplant, also known as a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), is a specialized treatment for certain blood cancers and blood disorders. It replaces damaged or unhealthy blood-forming stem cells with healthy cells. The two main types are autologous transplant, using the patient’s own stem cells, and allogeneic transplant, using donor cells. Although the stem cell infusion itself is generally not a surgical procedure, treatment and recovery can be intensive.
